Why Spring Hockey Matters

Spring is one of the most important - and often misunderstood - development windows in youth hockey.

When done intentionally, spring hockey becomes a powerful opportunity for players to develop skills, habits, and confidence that carry forward not just into the next season, but for years to come.

Ice Dogs Spring Travel Hockey is designed for families who value long-term growth and who want their players to arrive at the fall season ready to succeed alongside their teammates.

What Makes Ice Dogs Different

“If you put in the work when nobody’s watching, the results show up when it matters.”

Michael Jordan

Unlike traditional spring hockey models that prioritize games and results, our spring program is intentionally different. It's a purposeful, skills-driven development season intentionally designed to accelerate individual skill growth and build individual player confidence.

As a club, we’re incredibly fortunate to have a best-in-class, dedicated Ice Dogs coaching staff. Day in and day out, our head and assistant coaches show up with the passion, knowledge, and leadership required to drive team development, compete, and maximize player potential during the long fall season.

Our Ice Dogs Spring Travel Hockey session will place a deliberate, focused emphasis on individual skill growth. To support this initiative, we’re bringing in professional skills coaches to work alongside our teams and Ice Dogs coaching staff at no additional cost to families.

Our goal is to accelerate player confidence with every player leaving the spring season more skilled and better prepared for the next stage of their hockey journey.

Here’s what makes our spring program intentionally different:

Exposure to Different Teaching Styles

The Ice Dogs has made a significant investment in bringing in diverse, high-level professional skills coaches to workalongside our teams and Ice Dogs coaching staff at no additional cost to families.

Exposure to different teaching styles, new coaching voices, and novel instructional perspectives helps players learn in a fresh way, accelerate breakthroughs, and build a deeper understanding of the game.

This year's professional skills coaching lineup includes Matthew Ford, Kevin Delaney, Justin Nelson, Scott Herbster, and Roger Holeczy. Check out their bios below!

100% Skill Development & Maximum Puck Touches

While player development is and will remain to be a core pillar of our club’s mission, individual skill development is the foundation of our spring program. Our exclusive skills sessions will focus on power skating, puck control, shooting, passing, and hockey IQ. All of these are areas that tend to compete in priority during a team-focused, game-heavy fall/winter hockey season.

Players will benefit from meaningful reps during these skills sessions, which are designed to maximize puck touches, increase coaching feedback, and drive progress towards mastery of skills.

Teamwork Still Matters

While individual development is the priority, players will continue to develop within a team environment. This includes:

  • Weekly team practices
  • Participation in one or more away tournaments, at the discretion of the Head Coach
  • Participation in the Glacier Invitational Tournament (May 14–18)

A Smarter Approach to Competition

Rather than chasing results, spring games and tournaments are secondary to skill development. They serve as opportunities for players to apply newly developed skills in real game situations, reinforcing learning and nurturing confidence.

Players aren’t just playing more: they’re playing better.

Multi-Sport Friendly

We believe multi-sport athletes become better hockey players. Our spring program is designed to provide flexibility for multi-sport athletes while still delivering a consistent, high-quality hockey experience.

Part of a Larger Player Development Vision

The Ice Dogs 2026 Spring focus is not a standalone concept. This investment is part of our broader Ice Dogs Development Cycle:

FALL SEASON (Games) Primarily focused on team play/growth, competition, and pursuit of playoffs. Inclusive of individual player development, but often prioritizing the development of the team as a unit, and learning to play and overcome adversity together.

SPRING SEASON (Skills) Primarily focused on individual skill growth, individual development, and individual confidence-building. Inclusive of select team tournaments, prioritizing individual skill growth over team practices, and creating opportunities for athletes to participate in multiple sports (without feeling like they are letting their team down or missing out on team practices).

SUMMER PROGRAMMING (Growth) IDHA and Glacier offerings will continue to focus on individual skill development, age-appropriate strength training and speed/agility training, and continued encouragement of multi-sport athletic pursuits.

This intentional development cycle allows players to continue their growth year-over-year, build skills and confidence, and apply them within team structures when it matters most.

Meet Our 2026 Spring Skills Coaches

Ford Hockey School delivers high-level skill development and hockey IQ training for players who want to take their game to the next level. Built on a foundation of strong fundamentals, decision-making, and compete habits, each session is designed to develop confident, game-ready players.

Training is structured, high tempo, and directly transferable to real game situations. Players improve puck control, skating efficiency, awareness, and the ability to process the game faster under pressure. The focus is not just performing drills, but building skills that hold up when it matters most.

Ford Hockey School was founded by former professional player and coach Matthew Ford.

Kevin Delaney is a member of the development coaching staff for the Chicago Blackhawks and Rockford IceHogs for the past 15 years, contributing to the Blackhawks’ 2013 and 2015 Stanley Cup championship teams. In addition, he served as a development coach with the University of Wisconsin men’s hockey team for six years and the women’s team for five years (national championships in 2019 and 2021).

Runs daily skates with players beginners-adult and is well-versed in giving the players the proper foundation to improve their game.

Justin “Nelly” Nelson is a professional on-ice skills coach working with youth, college, and professional hockey players. His training focuses on power skating, passing, stickhandling, shooting, and battle skills—developing complete, confident players prepared for the next level.

Nelly’s approach blends high-tempo skill development with game-real situations, helping athletes improve performance, hockey IQ, and confidence. His mission is to push players outside their comfort zone while giving them the tools needed to succeed at higher levels of competition.

Scott Herbster is entering his 10th year as a full-time Skating and Skill Development Coach. During the regular season, he works with a wide range of youth and high school organizations, providing skating and skills instruction through Herbster Hockey Power Skating & Skills. Scott also serves as the Skills Coach for the Tucson Roadrunners of the AHL (Utah Mammoth affiliate) and as Director of Skill Development for the University of Wisconsin–Superior NCAA Division III men’s and women’s teams. Scott has additionally worked with the University of Wisconsin–Madison NCAA Division I men’s program.

In the offseason, Scott trains dozens of NHL, PWHL, and Olympic athletes while Herbster Hockey operates summer programs for players of all ages and skill levels throughout the Chicagoland area, focusing on elite skating mechanics and comprehensive skill development.

Roger Holeczy is a Chicago-area hockey skills coach known for building confident, high-compete players through elite skill development and game-translatable training. A Chicago native, Roger played his youth hockey with Team Illinois before continuing his career at Northeastern University, where he served as a 2-year captain and earned Ironman status by playing in 145 straight games. Then played professionally in Europe, Sweden, Germany, and Hungary, playing for Team Hungary in the World Championships.

Coach Roger wants to bring players that same experience, being able to control the puck and make plays on the ice without looking at the puck. Roger was a lead instructor for the Turcotte Stickhandling method, now also adding on the new Poweredge Pro system, which Connor McDavid grew up training with. Roger is a Certified Power Edge Pro Coach. In the game of hockey, we must be able to 1) control the puck; 2) move our feet; 3) look at what is ahead of us. The goal of Rogers' practice is to incorporate these 3 mechanics.
